The Axe & Cleaver, Dunham Massey – 10km

Out of the pub turn right, over the canal and turn right onto it, head down the canal until you see the Bay Malton Pub, come up just after it (there’s some steps), carry straight on down the road until you see a sign for the Trans-Pennine Trail and turn left onto it. Carry on along this track until you reach a road that goes over the top, exit here to the left (the exit is the far side of the road). Carry on alonmg the road back towards Dunham and when you reach the bridge, just before the pub, get back on the canal (this is the same point we joined the canal earlier) and turn right. Carry on down the Canal for someway – the exit we need to take is the one after the aquaduct over the river Bollin (which I think is signposted as such), the footpath leaves the canal to the right then turns left back under the canal – follow this track along and round to the left past a pub called The Swan with Two Nicks – go past this and carry on down the road until you reach a narrow footbridge, cross the footbridge, and take the footpath straight ahead (not the one to the left). At the end of this path you enter Dunham Massey and can see the water mill to your left, carry on another few yards and you can see three or fours paths forking away – take the rightmost one of these. You’ll pass a pond full of lilies on your left. Keep going until the trees stop and follow the path round to the left. Through the double gate and carry on through about 3 more double gates (a bit of a pain this bit), you’ll then see a gatehouse and the exit to Dunham ahead (don’t exit here), turn left along the road back into Dunham, eventually you’ll see the House in front of you again, and there should be another path to the right leading out of Dunham, follow this and over the step style. Right onto the road for a matter of yards before turning left on to Woodhouse Lane/School lane, follow this road back to the pub.
